Carol Ann Near, 77, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away February 16, 2024, at Hospice House, Hutchinson, Kansas. She was born December 9, 1946, in Baldwin City, Kansas, the daughter of James and Mabel (Counselman) Moherman. Carol spent her early years growing up in Overbrook and Ottawa, Kansas. She met and married Don Good. After Don’s graduation from law school they moved to Osborne, Kansas. In 1975, Carol and Don moved to Meade, Kansas, where Carol continued to be a homemaker, but eventually returned to college and graduated from St. Mary’s of the Plains College in 1980, with a teaching degree. Don and Carol divorced in 1980, and Carol moved to Lyons, Kansas where she was a teacher at Lyons High School. She left teaching after a year and went on to work several retail jobs at Woydziak Hardware and Hogan’s Pharmacy for a few years. In the mid-1990s, Carol started working at Lyons Middle School and pursuing her master’s degree in counseling. She completed this in 1998 and was a counselor for Ellinwood Middle and High Schools for fifteen years, until her retirement in 2013. Her retirement didn’t last long, and she became a counselor again at Central Plains High School in Claflin, Kansas, for a few additional years. Carol also waited tables at Schirer’s Restaurant, Hotel Ly-Kan and The Lyons Country Club. She was an active member of the Coranado Community Theater Group and acted in several productions over the years. Carol was an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. She was passionate about history including the Santa Fe Trail and Little Big Horn. On November 4, 1989, Carol married Vester Near in Lyons. He preceded her in death on April 29, 2010. She is also preceded in death by her parents; and two step-children. Carol is survived by her two sons, Darrin Good and wife Vickie of Gardner, KS, and Mark Good and wife Irene of Denver, CO; one stepchild; numerous grandchildren, step-grandchildren; and countless others, whom she loved and cared for dearly. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, March 2, 2024, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Lyons, with Father Brian Viel officiating. Burial will follow at the Lyons Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 7:00 P.M., Friday, March 1, 2024, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons, with family present from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M.
